Lok Sabha Elections 2024: In an unexpected turn of events, Arun Goel, the Election Commissioner, tendered his resignation just days before the highly anticipated announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His departure leaves only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar remaining in the panel.
Arun Goel's resignation, effective from March 9, 2024, was accepted by the President as per the provisions of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. His term was initially expected to extend until 2027.
Goel's departure further diminishes the Election Commission's strength, initially comprising three members. The retirement of Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey in February had already reduced the panel to two members.
Arun Goel, a former IAS officer, assumed office as the Election Commissioner in November 2022. His appointment raised eyebrows due to his voluntary retirement from the Indian Administrative Services, where he served as the Union Heavy Industries Secretary.
Born on December 7, 1962, in Patiala, Goel boasts an illustrious career as an IAS officer of the 1985 batch, Punjab cadre. He holds a post-graduate degree in Development Economics from Churchill College, University of Cambridge, England, and has received training at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.
During his tenure as Union Heavy Industries Secretary, Goel played a pivotal role in driving India's E-vehicle movement and implementing Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes, securing substantial investments.
Goel's district-level experience, including his role as the District Election Officer of Ludhiana and Bathinda districts, underscores his expertise in overseeing elections. As Principal Secretary in Punjab, he spearheaded Master Plans for New Chandigarh and other major towns.
Appointed as Election Commissioner in November 2022, Goel's contributions and strategies during his tenure remain subject to scrutiny. His sudden resignation adds a new dimension to the Election Commission's dynamics, especially as the nation gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Arun Goel's resignation marks a significant development in India's electoral landscape, prompting discussions about its implications and the future direction of the Election Commission. As the country awaits further updates, Goel's contributions and legacy within the commission remain a subject of interest and evaluation.
