Lok Sabha Elections 2024: In a significant strategic move preceding the impending elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) appear to be gravitating towards a prospective alliance. This alliance not only holds the promise of bolstering the BJP's prospects in the Lok Sabha elections, aiming for a historic victory, but also assists the BJD in extending its governance in Odisha.
The BJP and BJD are seemingly edging towards an alliance in a calculated move anticipated to amplify BJP's aspirations for an impressive tally in the Lok Sabha elections while ensuring BJD's continued leadership in Odisha.
A significant indication of this potential pact surfaced when the BJP's core committee for Odisha curtailed its discussions on the selection of candidates to only 14 out of the state's 21 seats. Previously, in 2019, the BJP contested all 21 seats, securing victory in eight. Conversely, the BJD clinched 12 seats, while the Congress managed just one. As part of the proposed alliance, the BJP is slated to contest 47 assembly seats, with the remaining 100 reserved for the BJD.
The rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, despite BJD's departure from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2009, has remained intact. Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP Chief J.P. Nadda's participation in the core committee meeting for Odisha underscores the potential for an alliance revival.
Former Union Minister Jual Oram confirmed discussions regarding a possible coalition plan, emphasizing that the central leadership would make the final decision.
The alliance, if materialized, could significantly bolster BJP's electoral ambitions, aiming for a target of 370 seats, with the support of NDA allies contributing an additional 30 seats to surpass the 400-mark. This strategic move comes at a time when the opposition parties are grappling with coalition dynamics, providing BJP an opportunity to consolidate its position with influential regional allies.
While seat-sharing arrangements with allies in Bihar, including JD(U) and LJP, have reportedly been finalized, discussions are ongoing regarding Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Haryana, and other states. BJP's central election committee is slated to convene over the weekend to finalize the remaining details.
The proposed alliance between BJP and BJD underscores the evolving political landscape in India, with both parties poised to leverage their strengths to secure electoral gains in the upcoming polls. As discussions progress, the contours of this strategic partnership will likely shape the political narrative leading up to the elections.
