Lok Sabha Elections 2024: In a significant move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seemed poised to finalize a seat-sharing agreement with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections. TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu, accompanied by his ally Jana Sena party chief Pawan Kalyan, engaged in discussions with Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief J P Nadda to iron out the details of the potential pact for the concurrent elections.
According to sources, TDP has consented to allocate six Lok Sabha seats — Araku, Rajahmundry, Narsapuram, Eluru, Rajampet, and Tirupati — to BJP. However, the party has contested BJP's claim for an additional three seats: Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Hindupuram. The specifics regarding the distribution of the 175 assembly seats remain undisclosed. Talks, held at Shah's residence, were reportedly progressing positively, hinting at a potential joint press conference on Friday.
TDP was formerly part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but withdrew in 2018 during Naidu's tenure as the state's chief minister. The prospective alliance signifies BJP's strategic outreach to consolidate its position in Andhra Pradesh politics.
As discussions with allies from various states, including Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, near conclusion, NDA constituents are slated to convene on Sunday. This assembly serves as a demonstration of solidarity, contrasting with the opposition's struggle to forge consensus within the INDIA bloc.
Jana Sena, led by Pawan Kalyan, initially aligned with NDA and later allied with TDP, advocating for BJP's inclusion. The evolving dynamics underscore the intricate negotiations shaping the political landscape ahead of the elections.
In a parallel development, BJP and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha, currently in power, are reportedly nearing a coalition agreement. Recent meetings between senior leaders of both parties indicate a likelihood of formalizing their alliance.
While discussions between Naidu, Shah, and Nadda in February hinted at a possible alliance, definitive arrangements are yet to materialize. The evolving alliances underscore the fluidity of political dynamics and the pursuit of strategic partnerships to navigate the electoral landscape.
