Lok Sabha Elections 2024: A recent report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has shed light on the criminal and financial landscape of Lok Sabha MPs. According to the analysis of self-sworn affidavits, a staggering 44 per cent of the sitting MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of these, 29 per cent face serious criminal charges, including allegations of murder, attempt to murder, and crimes against women.

The report further reveals that among MPs with serious criminal charges, nine face murder cases, with five belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Additionally, 28 MPs have declared cases related to attempted murder, with a majority of 21 MPs affiliated with the BJP.

In terms of financial status, 5 per cent of the sitting Lok Sabha MPs are billionaires, boasting assets exceeding Rs 100 crore. The analysis indicates that both the BJP and the Congress have the highest number of billionaire MPs, although other parties also have significant representation.

The distribution of criminal cases among states reveals significant figures from states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh, where more than 50 per cent of MPs face criminal charges. Moreover, there are stark wealth disparities among MPs, with some possessing assets worth hundreds of crores while others have minimal assets.

Among the top MPs with the highest declared assets are Nakul Nath and DK Suresh from the Congress, along with Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju, an Independent MP. The report also highlights that 73 per cent of MPs have graduate or higher educational qualifications, while only 15 per cent are women.

The ADR report provides crucial insights into the criminal backgrounds, financial standings, and demographic representation of Lok Sabha MPs. As India's democratic landscape evolves, such analyses serve as vital tools for promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
