Intense rain and thunderstorms lashed six districts of Odisha on Saturday. Reports suggest that around ten people have been killed across six districts, including Khurda, Bolangir, Angul, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, and Dhenkanal.

Angul, Boudh, Jagatsinghpur, and Dhenkanal have one casualty each, two in Bolangir and four people in Khurda district according to the office of the special relief commissioner. Three more were also injured by lightning in Khurda.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a similar situation in several states for the next four days and has issued an orange warning to the coastal state of Odisha.

Upcoming weather situation in Odisha

The twin cities of Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack read 126mm and 95.8 mm of rainfall respectively during a 90-minute rainfall in the afternoon.

According to a post shared by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) on X (Twitter), the state also recorded 36,597 CC (cloud to cloud) lightning and 25,753 CG (cloud to ground) lightning in the afternoon.

The weather reports suggest that the Bay of Bengal is witnessing a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Bay of Bengal while another is likely to form over the north of the Bay of Bengal around September 3, H R Biswas, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre said in an interview.

Due to this phenomenon, a low-pressure area is likely to form during the subsequent 48 hours. This low-pressure area and cyclonic circulation will affect the southwest monsoon, which remained subdued in Odisha till now, and will cause heavy rainfall during the next three to four days, he said.

Odisha CM’s aid to Himachal

The chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik announced on Saturday that an assistance of ₹ 5 crore for rain-ravaged Himachal Pradesh will also be provided by the state. The assistance will be given from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, a statement issued by the CMO said.
