Legendary 'Shayar' Munawwar Rana dies at 71 due to cardiac arrest

New Delhi: Famous poet Munawwar Rana dies at the age of 71 years. The poet was battling prolonged illness and breathed his last at Lucknow's PGI hospital. He was being treated for his prolonged illness related to kidney and heart. However, he succumbed to his life owing to a cardiac arrest.

He was undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital since May 22 last year. The acclaimed Urdu poet Munawwar Rana has been placed on a ventilator as his condition worsened. According to a health bulletin issued by the hospital an infection has spread throughout Rana’s body due to the presence of pus in his gallbladder. The distinguished artist has been grappling with chronic health issues such as kidney disease, elevated sugar levels, and blood pressure problems.

Suffered infection in throat, lungs  

In 2017, Munawwar Rana experienced an infection in his lungs and throat, leading to his admission to SG-PGI, Lucknow. Furthermore, he has undergone surgeries on both knees and has been on dialysis for several years. Owing to kidney problems, he has also sought treatment in Delhi.

Returned the Sahitya Akademi Award citing intolerance

It's noteworthy that Rana received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 but returned it in 2015, citing the BJP government's alleged promotion of intolerance in society. He gained attention during the farmers' agitation by suggesting the demolition of the Parliament House. In previous instances, during the anti-CAA protests, Rana, along with his daughter, expressed support for the protestors.
