Legal trouble for Patanjali! Official, 2 others get 6 months imprisonment after 'soan papdi' fails quality test

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand has sentenced three people, including an assistant manager of Patanjali Ayurved Limited, to six months in jail for failing the quality test of Soan Papdi.

After the Supreme Court's strictness, the troubles of Baba Ramdev's company Patanjali are not decreasing. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand has sentenced three people, including an assistant manager of Patanjali Ayurved Limited, to six months in jail for failing the quality test of Soan Papdi. 

Soan Papdi fails quality test

On October 17, 2019, a food safety inspector had visited Leela Dhar Pathak's shop in the main market of Berinag in Pithoragarh, where concerns were raised about Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi. Samples were collected and notices were issued to Ramnagar Kanha Ji Distributor as well as Patanjali Ayurved Limited. After this, forensic investigation was conducted at the State Food and Drug Testing Laboratory in Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand. In December 2020, the state food safety department received a report from the laboratory that indicated substandard quality of the sweets. After this, cases were registered against businessman Leela Dhar Pathak, distributor Ajay Joshi and Patanjali assistant manager Abhishek Kumar.

Court sentenced six months imprisonment

After the hearing, the court sentenced the trio to six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively under Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The court announced its decision under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. "The evidence presented in the court clearly points out the substandard quality of the product," the food safety official said.
