A landslide occurred early Tuesday morning at the Sanjauli Tunnel construction site in Shimla, causing significant disruption but fortunately no loss of life or property. According to the sources, the incident took place at the entry gate of the under-construction tunnel in Chalonthi, a suburb of Shimla.
The Sanjauli Tunnel, part of a major infrastructure project aimed at expanding the four-lane highway from Parwanoo to Shimla, experienced a severe landslide at the Titeri tunnel entrance. The construction work, which is progressing between Kaithlighat and Dhali, faced an unexpected setback when a substantial portion of the hill collapsed onto the tunnel’s mouth.
The preliminary investigations revealed that prior to the landslide on Monday, a minor rockfall had prompted the evacuation of workers and machinery from the tunnel area. Despite these precautions, heavy debris later fell from above, further compounding the situation. The National Highway Authority, responsible for stabilizing the hill, was engaged in digging a 400-meter-long tunnel when the collapse occurred.
The landslide has resulted in a hazardous situation for the National Highway near Dhali Junction, with ongoing rockfalls threatening the stability of the road. Authorities are working to address the situation and prevent further damage. The tunnel’s entry remains blocked, and efforts are underway to clear the debris and assess the impact on the surrounding infrastructure.
