In a dramatic incident in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, BJP MLA Yogesh Verma was slapped by an advocate on Wednesday. The confrontation, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation, has captured widespread attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Supporters of Verma retaliated against the advocate, leading to a brawl before police intervened to restore order.

The advocate involved was identified as Awadhesh Singh, the president of the local Bar Association, according to reports this incident comes at a time when tensions are already running high due to the upcoming Urban Cooperative Bank management committee elections, set to take place in the area.

The underlying controversy

This altercation coincides with growing controversy over the elections, which are scheduled to commence on October 14. A letter from BJP district president Sunil Singh and MLA Yogesh Verma has surfaced, requesting the elections be postponed. However, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Sanjay Singh has stated that the elections will proceed as planned. Adding fuel to the fire, allegations of tampering with the voter list have surfaced, with some accusing individuals of tearing up parts of the list.

The election process involves around 12,000 eligible shareholders. The nomination process was set to begin on Wednesday, with October 10 as the deadline for withdrawal. The final voter list is expected to be released on October 11, alongside the allocation of election symbols.

Statements on election fairness

Despite the ongoing controversy, ADM Sanjay Singh has reassured the public that the elections will be conducted fairly. Meanwhile, MLA Yogesh Verma has expressed concerns about alleged fraud in the election process, further intensifying the situation.
