The first-ever women police station was inaugurated in the Kargil district of the Union Territory of Ladakh, police officials said on Wednesday, adding that the new station was a significant step towards empowering women and ensuring their safety and security.

The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Ladakh, S D Singh Jamwal inaugurated the new women police station and emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment and their active participation in law enforcement. He said that the new station will deal specifically with crimes against women and aim to provide better delivery of services to women.

The inauguration was attended by Superintendent of Police Kargil Anayat Ali Chowdhury, Additional SP Kargil Iftikhar Chaudhary, as well as other senior police officers.

“The [women police] station will operate round the clock to ensure immediate assistance and support for women in need. Additionally, it will act as a resource centre, providing guidance and counselling services for women facing challenging situations,” ADGP Jamwal said.

“The inauguration of the women police station in Kargil is a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and secure society. This initiative will enable women to approach the police with greater confidence, knowing that their concerns will be addressed sensitively and expeditiously.”

Kargil women police station landmark moment, will address challenges of women: Ladakh police

The establishment of the women police station in Kargil is a landmark moment for the union territory as it will play a pivotal role in addressing the unique concerns and challenges faced by women in the area.

“With a dedicated focus on handling cases related to women’s rights, domestic violence, harassment, and other gender-specific offenses, this new initiative aims to provide a safer and more supportive environment for women to report incidents and seek justice,” the Ladakh police chief told reporters.

The new police station will have well-trained and dedicated female police officers among the staff to deal with the problems faced by women and handle them sensibly.

“The Ladakh police department is committed to strengthening the bond between the police force and the community, and this new women’s police station is a testament to that commitment,” the ADGP said.

During his visit to Kargil, ADGP Jamwal also said that three people accused of assaulting a police officer have been arrested, as per local media reports.
