New Delhi: The high-stakes electoral battle in Delhi concluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a decisive victory, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a significant setback. The Congress, once a dominant force in the capital, continued its downward spiral, failing to win a single seat for the third consecutive time.

Congress dents AAP’s prospects

Despite its poor performance, the Congress played a crucial role in cutting into AAP’s vote share, indirectly benefiting the BJP. The party siphoned votes from AAP but failed to match BJP’s tally, ultimately aiding the saffron party's sweeping win. The final results saw BJP clinching 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to just 22 seats in the Delhi Assembly.

Political Barbs and reactions

In the aftermath of the results, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao took a sarcastic dig at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of being instrumental in BJP’s victory. In a post on X, Rama Rao remarked:

"Congrats to Rahul Gandhi for winning the election for BJP, yet again! Well done."

Later, while addressing the media, he went further, calling Rahul Gandhi "the biggest supporter of BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi". He criticized the Congress for weakening strong regional parties like KCR’s BRS, AAP, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, Pinarayi Vijayan’s CPI(M), and MK Stalin’s DMK, claiming that this approach only strengthens the BJP.

PM Modi’s jibe at Congress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn't hold back in mocking Congress' continued electoral failure. Addressing BJP supporters at the party headquarters, Modi noted that Congress has achieved a "double hat-trick of zero", referring to the party's failure to win even a single seat in Delhi’s last six elections. "The oldest party in the country is not able to get even one seat in the national capital for the last six times. They are giving themselves a gold medal of defeat," Modi remarked. The PM further accused Congress of indulging in the "politics of urban Naxals", alleging that the party has been stealing the language and agenda of its allies, making it a "parjeevi party" (parasitic party).

Rahul Gandhi’s response

Following the dismal performance, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged the people's verdict with humility, stating that the Congress would continue to fight for Delhi’s progress and against pollution, price rise, and corruption. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha also expressed gratitude towards party workers and supporters
