As Janmashtami is believed to be the day of the birth of Lord Krishna, it becomes more important to recall the epic story of the birth of Lord Krishna. How Lord Krishna is said to have arrived on earthAs per the plan of Lord Vishnu, Sheshnag was to be born as the 7th child of Devaki. When Devaki was pregnant with the 7th child, the deities and the Lord tricked her into having an abortion. At the same time, that child was delivered to the womb of Rohini, the first wife of Vasudev. Later this child was known as Balarama, the elder brother of Shri Krishna.Image Source: FlickrAfter this, Devakis 8th child was born in Rohini Nakshatra on Ashtami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadra Pad. As soon as he was born, all the soldiers fell asleep on their own. The handcuffs of Devaki and Vasudev were opened and so were the doors of the jail opened automatically. Both of them were not able to understand anything and then a voice came from the sky saying leave this son at Nandbabas place in Gokul. He did exactly that. He laid Shri Krishna in a basket and left him across the river Yamuna in Gokul and brought his daughter sleeping in the cradle with him to the jail. After Vasudev returned, everything went back to its earlier state. The handcuffs and prison doors were put back on and the guards regained consciousness.Image Source: FlickrAs soon as they regained consciousness, the soldiers delivered the news of Devakis 8th child to Kansa. Kansa came running to the jail and snatched Devakis child from her lap. After this, as soon as Kansa raised his hand to kill her, she freed herself from his hand and flew into the air and said, Evil Kansa, I am Yogamaya. God has incarnated in Gokul to kill you. Now your end is fix. After this, Kansa sent many demons to Gokul to kill Shri Krishna, but no one could even bend his hair. In the end, he killed Kansa and freed Mathura from his terror. And the celebrations…Image Source: Wikimedia CommonsOne of the most celebrated days in India, Janmashtami is observed at the midnight as it is believed that lord Krishna was born at midnight.
