Kolkata Police have apprehended Sanjoy Roy in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The postgraduate medical student was discovered lifeless in the seminar hall of the government hospital, sparking outrage and demands for swift justice.

Grim autopsy report reveals brutal assault

An initial autopsy report revealed that the young doctor had been sexually assaulted before being murdered. The report indicated severe injuries across her body, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. Additionally, there were injuries to her face, neck, belly, left leg, and hands, pointing to a violent struggle. The findings also revealed that her neck had been broken, suggesting that she was strangulated before being smothered to death.

The crime is believed to have occurred between 3 and 6 a.m. on the day of the incident. A doctor from the hospital recounted that the victim had dinner with her juniors around 2 a.m. before retiring to the seminar room to rest, as there was no separate on-call room available. "In the morning, we found her body there," the doctor stated, reflecting the shock and horror experienced by the hospital staff.

Political repercussions and calls for swift justice

In the wake of this horrific crime, senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has called for the introduction of a new bill in Parliament to expedite the trial and conviction of rapists and murderers within a week.

Banerjee emphasised that such heinous criminals should either face encounters or be sentenced to death by hanging. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee echoed these sentiments, stating that her government will seek the death penalty for the perpetrator and has no objections to an investigation by any central agency.
