New Delhi: In a tragic turn of events, Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was subjected to verbal abuse by an enraged crowd near a Kolkata court on September 4. As Dr Ghosh was escorted to a vehicle by security personnel, a man from the crowd attempted to slap him, highlighting the intense public anger surrounding the case.

Dr Ghosh has come under severe criticism following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall on August 9, which ignited a nationwide outcry. The controversy surrounding Dr Ghosh intensified after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him on allegations of corruption and financial misconduct at the state-run hospital. He was presented in court on September 4 and remanded to eight days in custody. The next court session is scheduled for September 10.

CBI takes over investigation

In the wake of the crime, Dr Ghosh resigned from his position at RG Kar Medical College, citing an inability to endure the "humiliation on social media." Despite this, the West Bengal government quickly appointed him as the principal of another medical college in Kolkata, a decision that has faced substantial criticism. Following these developments, Dr Ghosh was suspended by the Mamata Banerjee administration due to allegations of financial misconduct. The investigation, initially handled by state police, was transferred to the CBI by a Calcutta High Court order.

Corruption allegations surface amidst death investigation

Further complicating the matter, a former colleague of Dr Ghosh has leveled multiple allegations of corruption against him, suggesting a possible link between the alleged misconduct and the doctor’s death. The Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court have both criticized Dr Ghosh and the hospital administration for their handling of the situation. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud remarked, "What is the reason the FIR is lodged almost 14 hours after the discovery of the (body). The most important thing is that the principal of the college should have come straightaway to the college and directed the filing of the FIR."

High Court questions police investigation

The High Court questioned why Kolkata Police had to file an unnatural death case when the hospital did not file a formal complaint. The court noted, "When the deceased victim was a doctor working in the hospital, it is rather surprising as to why the Principal/hospital did not lodge a formal complaint. This, in our view, was a serious lapse, giving room for suspicion." Additionally, the court scrutinized the state government’s swift appointment of Dr Ghosh to another position shortly after his resignation.
