In a major development in the investigation of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has revealed that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the institution, provided deceptive responses during his polygraph test and layered voice analysis. This finding intensifies the scrutiny on Ghosh, who is being probed in connection with the August 9 crime.
The CBI alleges that Ghosh received information about the crime at 9:58 AM but delayed filing a police complaint. Instead of lodging an immediate First Information Report (FIR), he submitted a vague complaint. Additionally, officials claim Ghosh introduced a theory suggesting suicide, which they have dismissed based on external injuries visible on the victim’s body, particularly as the lower part of her body was undressed.
CBI investigators further revealed that Ghosh contacted Tala Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC), Abhijit Mondal, at 10:03 AM on the same day. The case was registered as an unnatural death at 11:30 AM. Mondal, who was also arrested, failed to respond immediately after receiving information about the incident.
The general diary entry (GDE 542) recorded that the body of the postgraduate trainee was found "unconscious" in the chest medicine seminar room. However, a doctor had already examined the body and declared the victim dead. The CBI suspects that this entry was deliberately falsified in conspiracy with hospital authorities and others to mislead the investigation.
Mondal’s delay in filing the FIR and his failure to preserve the crime scene are believed to have resulted in the destruction of crucial evidence. The agency has alleged that both Ghosh and Mondal were involved in protecting Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer arrested the following day after CCTV footage showed him entering the seminar room at 4:03 AM.
A report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), New Delhi, indicated Roy’s testimony was also "deceptive on certain critical points." Ghosh and Mondal, both already implicated in separate financial irregularity cases, were arrested on Saturday.
Meanwhile, it is important to note that Mondal has now been taken for the medical examination from the CBI office in Kolkata.
