New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a plastic bag exploded in Kolkata, leaving one person injured. The injured individual, identified as 58-year-old Bapi Das, has been admitted to NRS Medical College Hospital for treatment. The explosion occurred when a passerby attempted to pick up a suspicious plastic bag lying on the road, which suddenly detonated.

What actually happened?

The explosion took place around 1:45 PM on Saturday near the junction of Blochman Street and S.N. Banerjee Road. According to the report, Taltala Police Station received information about a suspicious bag lying on the road. When the bag was investigated, it unexpectedly exploded, injuring a garbage picker who was passing by and attempted to pick it up.

Immediate police response

Following the explosion, local authorities cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was immediately called to the scene to inspect the area and ensure there were no further threats. After a thorough inspection, the BDDS team gave clearance, and traffic flow was allowed to resume.

The injured individual, Bapi Das, revealed to hospital officials that he had been living on the footpath near S.N. Banerjee Road after recently becoming homeless. He also mentioned that he had been wandering around the area with no permanent occupation. Due to his condition, the police have yet to formally record his statement, as he is currently resting and recovering.

The police have launched a full investigation into the explosion. Forensic experts have been called in to examine the scene and the remnants of the plastic bag to determine the cause of the blast. At present, authorities are exploring all possibilities and gathering evidence to understand whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger threat.
