Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was moved from the law ministry and appointed Minister of Earth Sciences on Thursday. Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who is now Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture, will take his seat in the law ministry. In place of Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal will now have additional responsibilities as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice, based on a press release from the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Earlier, some Opposition leaders criticised Rijiju for “speaking like an outlaw” and “propagating injustice” when he said that “some retired judges” were “part of the anti-India gang.” In January, Rijiju wrote to India’s Chief Justice, D Y Chandrachud, “suggesting” the consideration of a government candidate in the selection procedure for judge shortlisting. This arose during a dispute between the Supreme Court and the Centre about the delay in appointing judges.

Kiren Rijiju took over as law minister in July 2021. He is a three-term Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal Pradesh, and he graduated from Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre with a law degree. Many in the government were surprised by his appointment to Cabinet status from the junior minister with Independent responsibility for Youth Affairs and Sports.
