Update: Death toll crosses 150, more casualties expected

According to the recent updates, the death toll in Wayanad landslides have crossed 150. Kerala LoP VD Satheesan while speaking to ANI said, "The first priority is to carry out the rescue operations. The military and the NDRF are doing very well...We expect more casualties...It will take time to build the houses again now. The local MLAs and Panchayats are providing all support. We have demanded from the government that all displaced persons should be provided house rent as they don't have a house now. We will raise all these issues in the all-party meeting tomorrow. We are with the government to overcome this situation... "


 

The death toll in Kerala’s Wayanad landslides has increased to 143, with hundreds of others left injured and still trapped. The landslides have caused massive destruction to houses and roads. According to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, the postmortem of 116 bodies has been completed.

Two enormous landslides that swept away the Mundakkai and Chooramala sections of Vellarimala village occurred on Tuesday morning. The rescue efforts were hampered by the landslides, which uprooted trees, wrecked multiple houses, and caused water bodies to rise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi have all given support and condolences over the occurrence.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presided over a high-level meeting on Tuesday to plan rescue efforts in Wayanad's Meppadi villages, which were devastated by landslides, and to talk about the next actions.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts of the state. A holiday has been declared for several districts.
