Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has raised serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that his party workers are being intimidated and attacked in the lead-up to the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections. In a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday, Kejriwal urged the poll body to deploy independent observers in his New Delhi constituency and demanded the arrest of BJP workers allegedly involved in the attacks. He further called for the suspension of police officers who failed to protect AAP volunteers.
Kejriwal’s letter expressed concern over what he termed as the “harassment and intimidation” of AAP’s grassroots volunteers. He cited the case of a senior AAP worker who was detained without justification and falsely booked under Section 126 of the BNSS, 2023 at Tilak Marg Police Station.
According to Kejriwal, the worker had no criminal record, yet he was subjected to false charges and severe physical abuse by police officials, allegedly to the extent of fainting from the assault.
The former Delhi Chief Minister highlighted additional instances of violence against AAP workers. On Saturday, AAP MLA Mohinder Goyal was reportedly attacked during a public rally in Rohini, while Rithala candidate was allegedly threatened while interacting with residents.
Kejriwal’s letter further accused BJP workers of threatening AAP volunteers and their families, with warnings of demolishing homes and businesses if they continued political activities. He specifically named Raju Matiala, a supposed BJP member, who allegedly issued threats in Kali Bari Marg.
“We are witnessing a systematic effort to suppress our party’s grassroots workers through unlawful detentions and threats—allegedly orchestrated by the BJP—to discourage their participation in election-related activities,” Kejriwal stated.
Echoing Kejriwal’s concerns, AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh also wrote to the Election Commission, claiming that BJP workers physically assaulted AAP campaigners and obstructed their election activities in Kejriwal’s constituency.
Kejriwal is contesting from New Delhi Assembly constituency, facing off against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit. The Delhi Assembly election, comprising 70 constituencies, is scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8. The election will witness a three-way battle between AAP, BJP, and Congress, making it a high-stakes political showdown in the national capital.
