Gauri Lankesh murder accused bail: Two men accused of the murder of journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh were given a grand welcome by pro-Hindu supporters in Vijayapura after being granted bail by a Bengaluru court. Parashuram Waghmore and Manohar Yadave, who had spent six years in prison, were freed from Parappana Agrahara jail on October 11 after receiving bail on October 9 from a special court.

Murder accused receives heroic welcome, video surfaces

Upon their return to Vijayapura, Waghmore and Yadave were greeted by local supporters with garlands, orange shawls, and chants of celebration. They visited a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji, where they laid a garland as a symbolic gesture, followed by a visit to the Kalika temple to offer prayers. The jubilant reception was organized by pro-Hindu groups who claimed the men had been unjustly imprisoned.

Supporters claim wrongful detention

Supporters of Waghmore and Yadave asserted that the men had been wrongfully jailed, alleging that they were targeted due to their pro-Hindu affiliations. A prominent pro-Hindu leader addressing the media said, "Today is Vijayadasami, a significant day for us. We welcomed Parashuram Waghmore and Manohar Yadave, who have been unfairly jailed for six years on charges related to the murder of Gauri Lankesh. The real culprits have yet to be found, but these men were targeted simply because they are pro-Hindu workers. Their families have suffered, and this injustice needs serious introspection."

What is the Gauri Lankesh murder case?

Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist known for her strong criticism of right-wing Hindutva ideologies, was shot dead outside her home in Bengaluru on September 5, 2017. The case sparked nationwide outrage and condemnation. In December 2023, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ordered the creation of a special court to expedite the trial of those accused of her murder.
