New Delhi: In a resounding address, Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant discussed the pervasive issue dominating India's media landscape—the 'Issue of Deepfakes.' With a keen focus on social media's role and its impact on truth and trust, the esteemed judge highlighted the alarming consequences of such manipulative practices.

Deepfakes: A perilous game of manipulation

Justce Surya Kant expressed deep concerns over the rise of deepfakes, terming them as the agents that manipulate perceptions and compromise the very foundations of truth and trust. Highlighting their detrimental effect on individuals' reputations, he also underscored the pressing need for action against this serious risk that is gradually grappling the society.

Media's crucial role

Inititating his keynote address, Justice Surya Kant explores the intricate relationship between the law and scial media. Reflecting on his earlier speec at the 1st Dialogue that took place back in November 2022 regarding the resposibility of media when it comes to reporting on legal matters. He also said that media srves as a bride between the legal framework and the public.

Media as a double-edged sword

Justice Surya Kant further emphasised that the media weilds significant influence in both fortifying and undermining the authority of justice. As the chief guest at the Second Law and Constitution Dialogue, held at the NDMC Convention Centre in Delhi, he urged journalists to acknowledge their responsibility in contributing to the public's understanding of legal matters.

With a stern warning against the dissemination of fake news, Justice Surya Kant cautioned journalists about the haste to break stories that could distort public understanding over a particular issue. He urged the media to prioritise commitment to truth, objectivity, and accuracy, underlining the pivotal role it plays in shaping public perception.

Alarming reality of cyberbullying

Drawing attention to the pervasive problem of cyberbullying, Justice Surya Kant highlighted that a staggering 80 per cent of Indian children reported instances of cyberbullying. He acknowledged that the actual number could be higher, considering the underreporting of such incidents.
