A group of six Supreme Court judges consisting of Justice B.R. Gavai will conduct a relief camp evaluation visit to Manipur on March 22 through National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) outreach to provide legal and humanitarian aid to the region devastated by ethnic violence since months.
The Executive Chairman of NALSA Justice Gavai will join forces with Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan and N. Kotiswar Singh. The duodecennial celebration of the Manipur High Court would take place during the time of judicial officials' inspection. The population flees to relief camps across Manipur since the destructive sectarian violence of May 3, 2023 resulted in hundreds of casualties and displaced more than 50,000 people.
A NALSA statement emphasized the important role of legal and humanitarian help that continues to exist for these affected communities after the Supreme Court judges made their visit. Justice Gavai begins by providing online medical and legal services to Manipur people before starting legal aid clinics in Imphal East, Imphal West and Ukhrul districts. Multiple distribution programs will deliver vital assistance to people forced to relocate from their homes.
The camps conducted by legal services would enable IDPs to access government welfare programs while medical camps staffed by 25 doctors from Chennai provided medical support in relief camp locations. The Manipur State Legal Services Authority established 273 special legal aid clinics at relief camps to provide assistance for IDPs achieving government benefits and dead documentation assistance as well as medical support.
