New Delhi: Over 600 lawyers, including prominent figures like senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, have united in voicing their apprehensions regarding perceived threats to the integrity of the judiciary in India. In a letter addressed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, they highlighted concerns about attempts to influence judicial processes, sway court decisions, and tarnish the reputation of the judiciary.
The lawyers condemned what they referred to as a "vested interest group" allegedly employing manipulative tactics to influence judicial proceedings, particularly in cases involving allegations of corruption against political figures. They expressed alarm over the fabrication of false narratives aimed at distorting the perception of the judiciary's functioning and eroding public trust.
Of particular concern was the alleged practice of attempting to influence the composition of judicial benches and casting doubts on the integrity of judges, referred to as the "concocted theory of bench fixing." The lawyers emphasized that such actions not only disrespect the judiciary but also undermine the rule of law and the principles of justice.
The lawyers criticized the phenomenon of political figures switching stances on legal matters depending on their interests, which they argued undermines the credibility of the legal system. They highlighted instances where politicians accused individuals of corruption and then defended them in court, only to criticize court decisions that did not align with their interests.
Expressing concern over attempts to influence judicial appointments and spread misinformation on social media to pressure judges, the lawyers urged the Supreme Court to take decisive action to safeguard the independence and integrity of the judiciary. They emphasized the importance of not remaining silent in the face of such challenges, calling for proactive measures to uphold the rule of law.
