New Delhi: In a fresh controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee's party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), a student from Kolkata Medical College and Hospital has come forward with serious allegations. The student claims she was pressured to join the TMC, the ruling party in West Bengal, by four professors and the college dean. This incident has added to the growing list of accusations against the Mamata government, already under scrutiny due to the RG tax case.

Student alleges political coercion

The student alleged that she was threatened with academic consequences, including failure in exams, if she refused to join the TMC. According to reports, the pressure began in June when she sought a hostel room. It also claimed that the professors warned her that joining the TMC would grant her benefits, while refusal would result in penalties. The dean, instead of addressing her concerns, allegedly tried to cover up the professors' actions.

Hostel room denial, threats

The student’s troubles started when she faced issues securing a hostel room. When she approached the hostel superintendent to resolve the problem, she was met with more pressure to align with the TMC. Despite her refusal, the superintendent directed her to another professor, who allegedly continued the coercion. The student further revealed that her father, an employee at a government hospital, was also threatened.

Action taken after investigation

Following the student’s formal complaint, an investigation committee was set up to look into the matter. The committee’s findings, made public on Friday, confirmed the student’s allegations. The four professors involved were found guilty, and the college council discussed the report, leading to significant action. Until further notice, the professors have been suspended from their duties. Additionally, the college dean, Manav Nandi, was removed from his position, and Professor Arup Chakraborty was appointed as his replacement.
