Sources indicate that Champai Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former Jharkhand Chief Minister, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. Soren’s recent arrival in Delhi and his critical social media post have fueled speculation about his political shift ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly elections.

Discontent and speculations

Champai Soren’s recent social media update suggests deep dissatisfaction with his previous tenure. In his post, Soren revealed feeling "bitter humiliation" during his time as Chief Minister and indicated three possible paths for his future: retiring from politics, starting a new political party, or aligning with another party. His comments followed a dramatic entry into Delhi, intensifying rumours of his potential switch to the BJP.

Accusations and reactions

Soren's post criticized the abrupt cancellation of his government programs in early July, which he claims were executed without his consent. He expressed that his self-respect was wounded, leading him to consider alternative political avenues. “After so much humiliation, I was forced to look for an alternative path,” Soren stated, reflecting his discontent and uncertainty about his political future.

In response to Soren’s potential departure, BJP leader Babulal Marandi characterized the situation as the "beginning of the downfall of JMM," suggesting the party has strayed from its core values.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, meanwhile, has accused the BJP of "poaching" legislators and causing societal divisions. Speaking at a government event in Godda district, Hemant Soren alleged that the BJP is importing individuals from various states to create discord among Jharkhand's communities. He criticized the BJP’s tactics and suggested that upcoming assembly elections would be influenced by the opposition rather than the Election Commission.
