New Delhi: The excise constable recruitment drive in Jharkhand has turned into a tragic ordeal, with 11 candidates losing their lives while attempting to clear the mandatory physical test. The candidates were required to run a grueling 10 km in scorching heat, a challenge that proved fatal for some. Over 100 other participants collapsed and were rushed to hospitals, prompting concerns about the conditions under which the tests were conducted.

Medical experts suspect that some candidates may have resorted to using stimulant drugs or energy drinks to boost their performance, which could have led to suffocation or cardiac arrests. The extreme heat and long wait times have also been cited as significant factors contributing to the fatalities. According to Jharkhand Police, as of August 30, 2024, a total of 1,27,772 candidates participated in the recruitment process, with 78,023, including 21,582 women, qualifying. The recruitment drive, which began on August 22, is scheduled to continue until September 3, with physical tests being conducted at seven locations across the state.

Unnatural death's massive reports

In light of the tragic events, Unnatural Death (UD) cases have been filed to investigate the exact causes of death. “During the recruitment process, a total of 11 candidates have lost their lives,” said IG (Operations) AV Homkar, listing the locations where the deaths occurred. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has responded to the crisis by ensuring that medical teams, ambulances, and other essential facilities are available at all testing centers.

Additionally, the test schedule has been adjusted, with races now starting at 4:30 am to avoid the intense afternoon heat. However, the BJP has sharply criticized the state government, accusing it of turning the recruitment process into a "race of death." State BJP President Babulal Marandi has demanded immediate compensation for the families of the deceased and called for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
