The ruling alliance led by Chief Minister Champai Soren in Jharkhand will face a floor test on February 5, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir said on Saturday. The development has come after the formation of a new coalition government under Soren's leadership following the arrest of Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate.

On Friday, Champai Soren was sworn in as Jharkhand's chief minister. Champai Soren, who is a supporter of JMM leader Hemant Soren met Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan along with 43 legislators on Thursday at Raj Bhavan, staking their claim to form the state administration.

Speaking to ANI on Saturday, Mir, the Congress in-charge of Jharkhand, said till the floor test happens, the MLAs will camp at a 'protected place'.

Meanwhile, JMM leader Manoj Pandey said that doing a floor test is just a formality.

According to the sources, the JMM-led Mahagathbandhan alliance currently holds 49 seats in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, requiring 41 for a majority. The BJP, the main opposition party, has 28 seats.

This approach is perceived as an attempt by the ruling coalition to prevent the main Opposition actor, the BJP, from stealing its flock and to keep it together.

It is worth to be noted that the floor test is crucial for the Soren-led government as it seeks to prove its majority in the Assembly. The BJP and other opposition parties are likely to try and challenge the government's stability.
