A devastating train accident has struck Jharkhand's Jamtara district on Wednesday evening. Reports claimed the train ran over passengers at the Kalajharia railway station, resulting in multiple casualties. While the exact death toll remains unconfirmed, authorities fear numerous fatalities.

In a statement, the deputy commissioner of Jamtara confirmed that medical teams and ambulances have been urgently dispatched to the scene of the accident.  Relief efforts are currently underway as the situation continues to develop.

On the tragic accident, Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari said, "I have given the directions to identify those responsible for it. We will also raise the issue in the Assembly."

He also highlighted that deceased have not been identified yet.

How did it happen?

According to reports, passengers jumped onto the track when their train caught fire, leading to the fatal collision. However, Eastern Railway CPRO refuted claims of a fire, stating that two individuals, not passengers, were walking on the track and were run over by the train.

Jamtara SDM Anant Kumar asserted that those who were run over were indeed passengers who had disembarked from one train and were tragically crushed by another local train. Efforts are underway to establish a helpline to provide information to the families of the victims.

Jharkhand CM's response

Expressing condolences over the heartbreaking incident, Jharkhand's Chief Minister Chmapai Sorean assured that the administration is actively engaged in relief and rescue efforts at the scene of the accident and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

Jharkhand's Chief Minister wrote on his X post, "Heart is saddened by the sad news of train accident near Kaljharia station of Jamtara. May God grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this difficult time of grief."

"The administration team is engaged in relief and rescue work on the spot. I wish speedy recovery to those injured in the accident," he added.
