New Delhi: In a tragic incident today, two soldiers were killed during a fierce gunbattle with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district. The confrontation, which took place in the Ahlan Gadole area of the Kokernag subdivision, also left one soldier and two civilians injured.
The encounter began this afternoon as army personnel conducted an anti-terror operation in the dense forests of Kokernag. According to reports, terrorists opened fire on an army patrol unit, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The army's special forces, including paratroopers, were quickly mobilized to the area as part of the ongoing operation to neutralize the terrorists, who are believed to be foreign nationals.
In the course of the operation, two brave soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty. Additionally, a soldier and two civilians sustained injuries due to what has been described as "indiscriminate, desperate, and reckless firing" by the terrorists. The injured civilians received immediate medical attention and have been evacuated to a safer location.
This encounter marks the second significant gunbattle in Kokernag within the past year. In September 2023, a similar encounter in the same region claimed the lives of a Commanding Officer, a Major, and a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area as security forces continue their efforts to flush out the terrorists believed to be entrenched in the Ahlan Gadole forests. The Indian Army's Chinar Corps confirmed that operations are still underway, and the situation remains tense.
