Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Article 370 Resolution: In a heated session on Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed a resolution urging the central government to engage in dialogue with elected representatives to restore the region’s former special status, which was revoked on August 5, 2019. The move sparked strong opposition from BJP members, including Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, who argued that the resolution was not listed in the scheduled agenda.

Resolution for restoration of special status, video surfaces

The session opened with J-K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introducing the resolution to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir's special status. “This legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees, which safeguarded the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, and expresses concern over their unilateral removal,” Choudhary stated.

The resolution further stressed that any restoration process must respect both national unity and the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir's people.

BJP members voice strong opposition

Opposing the motion, Sunil Sharma stated, “We reject the resolution. The agenda specified discussion on the Lieutenant Governor’s address.” Sharma criticized other parties, claiming they were in a “rat race,” although they “know nothing is going to happen.” Referring to the abrogation of Article 370, Sharma remarked, “The Act was passed by the biggest temple of democracy in the country (Parliament).”

This comment incited heated reactions, with NC and BJP members on their feet, and BJP members even tearing copies of the resolution. Amidst the uproar, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather proceeded with a voice vote, passing the resolution.

BJP members storm well of house

Following the vote, BJP members rushed the well of the House, leading the Speaker to adjourn the session for 15 minutes. The Modi government’s decision in 2019 to abrogate Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, also split the former state into Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
