A 53-year-old woman who was on the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage died after being struck by naturally occurring shooting stones in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday, the police have confirmed.

According to police reports, the deceased pilgrim was identified as Urmilaben. She was seriously injured after being struck by shooting stones between the Sangam Top and Lower Cave while she was trekking towards the holy Amarnath Cave. The 36-48 kilometre long trek is known for its particularly difficult terrain.

The pilgrim succumbed to her injuries soon after.

J&K Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh expressed his condolences for the death of the pilgrim and extended his sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mountain Rescue Team members seriously injured while trying to rescue pilgrim

Two members of the Mountain Rescue Team of J&K Police were seriously injured while trying to rescue the injured woman. The rescue personnel have been identified as Selection Grade Constables Mohammed Salem and Mohammed Yaseen. They have been evacuated by the Army and taken to the hospital in a private helicopter on Amarnath Yatra duty.

DGP Dilbag Singh lauded the commitment of the two policemen and wished an early recovery for them.

The Amarnath Yatra, which began on July 1 and is being attended by more than 3 lakh people, will conclude its 62-day pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave – believed to be an abode of Lord Shiva – on August 31.
