Jammu & Kashmir: A tragic terrorist attack on Sunday evening near a campsite of the Z-mode tunnel at Gagangeer in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district claimed the lives of six non-local labourers and a doctor. Five others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) for urgent medical attention. According to police reports, the terrorists targeted a labour camp housing workers employed by a private company involved in tunnel construction. The sudden assault left several fatalities on-site, with the deceased identified as Dr. Shahnawaz, Faheem Nazir, Kaleem, Mohammad Hanif, Shashi Abrol, Anil Shukla, and Gurmeet Singh.
Following the attack, local police and security forces swiftly mobilized to secure the area and launch a search operation to track down the assailants. Investigations are underway to ascertain the identity of the attackers and uncover the motivations behind this heinous act of violence.
Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, expressing deep sorrow and outrage. He described the incident as a “dastardly and cowardly” act against innocent labourers, acknowledging the importance of the infrastructure project in which they were involved. Abdullah offered his condolences to the bereaved families and assured that justice would be served.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also condemned the incident, emphasizing that such acts of terror will not be tolerated. Shah expressed his condolences to the victims' families and vowed that the security forces will take strict action against the perpetrators. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari echoed similar sentiments, paying tribute to the fallen labourers and emphasizing the importance of the work they were engaged in. He wished for the swift recovery of the injured and called for decisive action against the terrorists.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reaffirmed the government's strong stance against terrorism. In a post on social media, Sinha vowed that those responsible for the attack will face dire consequences. He assured that security forces are on the ground and committed to rooting out terrorist elements from the region.
