New Delhi: The National Conference (NC) and Congress have finalized a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. As per the agreement, the NC will contest 51 out of the 90 seats, while Congress will field candidates in 31 constituencies. The announcement was made during a joint press conference by senior leaders of both parties on Monday evening.

J&K Congress chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, highlighted that the alliance will feature a "friendly but disciplined contest" in five constituencies. "The National Conference will contest on 51 seats, Congress on 32, and we have agreed to have a friendly but disciplined contest on five seats," Karra stated. Additionally, one seat each has been allocated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Panthers Party. The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are slated to take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the counting scheduled for October 4. These elections mark the first in nearly a decade for the Union Territory.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah expressed satisfaction with the alliance, emphasizing that both parties are united against forces trying to create division. "It is a matter of great happiness that we started this campaign together to fight against those who are attempting to divide people in Jammu and Kashmir. The INDIA alliance was formed to combat those forces that seek to communalize, divide, and destabilize the country," Abdullah said.

Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal also took aim at the BJP, asserting that the alliance is confident of forming a people-friendly government in Jammu and Kashmir. "The BJP is trying to destroy the soul of Jammu and Kashmir. Congress and the National Conference are coming together to form a government that truly serves the people. We are committed to winning and bringing stability to the region," he added.
