Leaders of Maharashtra (ANI)
The recent collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Siddhadurg, Maharashtra, has ignited widespread outrage. This incident has become a significant political flashpoint, with opposition leaders seizing the opportunity to criticize the state government. Despite prompt actions by the government, including filing an FIR against the sculptor and those responsible for the audit, and the formation of an inquiry committee, the fallout continues to stir political discord.
In the wake of the statue's collapse, the Maharashtra government acted swiftly. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issued a formal apology and announced plans to erect a new statue at the same location. However, the opposition has capitalized on the situation, accusing the state administration of mismanagement. Opposition figures such as Vijay Wadettiwar, Ambadas Danve, Jayant Patil, Satej Patil, and Aditya Thackeray visited the site, sharply criticizing the government’s handling of the incident. Their visit, coupled with the widespread dissemination of images of the fallen statue on social media, has been perceived by some as an attempt to inflame communal tensions.
Critics argue that opposition leaders, who did not visit the site prior to the collapse, gathered in Rajkot only after the incident. There have been allegations of misconduct, including claims that they clashed with MP Narayan Rane and his supporters while displaying party flags. This behavior has been interpreted as a strategic move to bolster political support by stirring communal unrest.
The opposition's reaction has not gone unnoticed. Leaders such as NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, and Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray have faced criticism for their focus on caste issues and derogatory comments about Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The opposition is accused of trying to foster communal discord and exploit the situation for political gain.
Further compounding the controversy, the Congress and NCP have been criticized for their failure to rename Aurangabad, a city named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Critics claim that these leaders have praised the Mughals while neglecting the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, further fueling accusations that their actions are motivated by political opportunism rather than genuine concern.
The ongoing controversy has led some to speculate that the opposition's actions are part of a broader strategy to create a politically charged environment reminiscent of the turmoil seen in Bangladesh. Accusations of betraying Shivaji Maharaj's legacy for political advantage have intensified, with Sharad Pawar facing particular criticism for allegedly exacerbating divisions between different communities.
