Maharashtra: Following the violence in Nagpur, the police cyber cell has detected posts on social media associated with Bangladesh, which were circulated to initiate violence. Till date, 97 false posts have been detected and over 200 individuals have been identified to spread rumours and violence. Following the violence in Nagpur, the police cyber cell has revealed astonishing facts in the inquiry. The cyber cell discovered that most social media updates about the violence have been uploaded from Bangladesh.
Till date, 97 social media updates have been discovered to be false and inflammatory, which instigated violence. URLs of a Facebook account were traced behind these updates, which were attempting to instigate violence.The cyber cell has located a number of computers associated with Bangladeshi IP addresses from where these provocative posts were disseminated. The police have filed four FIRs in this case for spreading rumours on social media. With this, the police have located approximately 200 individuals who are associated with the violence and rumours, and are attempting to locate 1000 more. The police have constituted 18 teams to speed up the investigation of the case.
Violence broke out in Nagpur following protests broke out seeking removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. Some right-wing organizations had allegedly burnt effigies of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, triggering rumors of Quran desecration and fights between various communities. This was followed by massive arson, stone-pelting and assault on policemen. Over 30 policemen were injured and several vehicles and property were destroyed in the violence.
Authorities had imposed curfew in some areas and sent over 1,000 police personnel to restore order after the violence. Various police teams are probing the Nagpur violence, but some of the accused who were involved in the violence are yet to be arrested. Meanwhile, Nagpur Police's cyber cell has been activated and is tracing the accused from social media posts, CCTV footage, mobile videos and media reports.
Nagpur police have so far arrested over 90 accused and the absconding accused are being searched with the assistance of cyber cell. The accused are being arrested based on the photographs and videos in possession of the police.
