Delhi News: In a surprising move, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that he will resign within the next two days, stating that a new leader from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will take his place. This unexpected decision has triggered speculation regarding his successor, with AAP leader Atishi Marlena emerging as a strong contender for the top post.

Atishi, a key figure in AAP's early development, currently holds 11 vital portfolios, including Finance, Education, Power, and PWD. She took oath as a minister in March 2023 following a cabinet reshuffle, after the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain. Her growing importance in the party was underscored when she was chosen to hoist the national flag on Independence Day, in Kejriwal's absence.

Atishi on the switch over

Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji Assembly constituency, has been a prominent voice in AAP, addressing critical issues such as the Delhi water crisis and the Swati Maliwal assault case. Her leadership experience has positioned her as a potential successor to Kejriwal. Regarding the post of Chief Minister, Atishi commented, "Our legislative party will have a meeting in which it will be decided what steps will be taken next. We want elections to be held in Delhi along with Maharashtra in November. We want the decision from the public today. The court has given its decision, now we want the decision of the public."

She also criticized the BJP, claiming they have harassed AAP for two years but failed to prove corruption. Kejriwal has called for early assembly elections, originally scheduled for February 2025, to be conducted in November. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari has dismissed Kejriwal's resignation as a "PR stunt."
