In a powerful statement from the Red Fort on the occasion of 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his deep concern over the rising atrocities against women in India. Addressing the nation, PM Modi emphasized the urgent need for society and government bodies to take these issues seriously. The statement from the PM has come following  recent rape and murder of junior doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.

"I would like to express my pain once again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening - there is outrage against this in the country," he stated, reflecting the widespread anger and frustration across the nation.

PM Modi highlighted the importance of prompt investigations and swift justice in such cases, stressing that it is crucial to maintain public confidence. "Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest - this is important to instil confidence in society," he asserted.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister pointed out a significant gap in media coverage, where discussions around punishments for such heinous acts are often overlooked. He urged for more extensive discussions on the consequences faced by the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent. "When rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed. But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in news, but restricted to a corner," PM Modi remarked.

He concluded by stressing the necessity of instilling fear among potential offenders through public awareness of severe penalties. "It is the need of the hour, that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is very important to instil this fear."

The Prime Minister also urged the nation to work towards a developed nation to be achieved by 2047. He said that 40 crore Indians showed strength and courage to drive away the British decades back. He also praised the efforts and dedication of farmers, soldiers, and youth among other sectors in taking the country to new heights.
