Wayanad Landslides: The Current Situation

The landslides, triggered by heavy rains on July 30, caused extensive damage in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Wayanad. The natural calamity flattened homes and trapped residents under debris, leading to a tragic death toll more than 400. Efforts are underway to support the affected community, including a crowdfunding feast in Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Wayanad on August 10 amidst calls from Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, for the disaster to be declared a national emergency. Such a declaration would facilitate the release of additional funds for relief and rehabilitation.

Chief Minister Vijayan revealed that the Kerala government has requested the central government to classify the landslides as a national and extreme disaster. He noted that the Union Home Ministry has formed a nine-member committee to assess the disaster's severity and provide a report. Vijayan expressed hope for central assistance and a comprehensive rehabilitation package to support Wayanad's recovery.
