New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi boards Train Force One for his visit to Ukraine, he's not just taking a trip—he's making a significant diplomatic statement. This 10-hour train journey through a war-torn landscape represents a high-stakes voyage marked by luxury and security, designed to accommodate world leaders like Modi.

The concept of 'Iron Diplomacy'

Train Force One is more than a name; it embodies the concept of 'Iron Diplomacy,' a term coined by Alexander Kamyshin, CEO of Ukraine's railway company Ukrzaliznytsia. With airports closed and roads unsafe due to the ongoing Russian invasion, this specially designed train offers a secure and reliable means of transport. It has already hosted US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Luxury and security on board

The train is equipped with wood-paneled cabins featuring a long table for meetings, a sofa for relaxation, and comfortable sleeping arrangements. This train was initially built in 2014 for tourism but was repurposed to serve as a critical transport service amid the conflict.

Modi's balancing act

PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine on August 23 follows his recent trip to Moscow, showcasing India’s neutral stance in the conflict and its commitment to peaceful dialogue. Modi’s trip marks the first visit by an Indian leader to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. Operating such a luxurious train through a war zone presents numerous challenges.

The Ukrainian railway system, under Kamyshin’s leadership, has managed to maintain operations despite power outages and security threats. Diesel engines now replace electric ones to ensure continuity of service. As PM Modi prepares for his journey on Train Force One, he becomes part of a unique chapter in history. This train has played a pivotal role in evacuating millions of Ukrainians and now serves as a crucial diplomatic lifeline.
