New Delhi: As Delhi gears up for the upcoming assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its campaign against Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of constructing a lavish residence dubbed the 'Sheesh Mahal' using public funds. The former Chief Minister's official residence has once again become a focal point of controversy, with BJP leaders alleging that Kejriwal transformed the property into a luxurious “7-star hotel” during his tenure.

BJP Leaders Share Damning Visuals

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva took to social media platform In his post, Sachdeva claimed that the opulent furnishings and renovations amounted to a “monument of corruption.” He emphasized that while Kejriwal indulged in luxury, he failed to fulfill numerous promises made to the citizens of Delhi. “Why did he decorate the 'Sheesh Mahal' with such costly items? This is taxpayers' money, and the people deserve transparency,” Sachdeva stated.

Political Strategy Ahead of Elections

The BJP's renewed focus on this issue comes as no surprise, given the party's history of targeting Kejriwal over alleged corruption. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader has faced multiple allegations, including being booked under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which led to his incarceration for several months. With assembly elections approaching in February 2025, the BJP aims to leverage these allegations to paint Kejriwal as a corrupt leader, a strategy that previously proved effective during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

In response to these allegations, AAP has dismissed them as politically motivated attacks designed to tarnish Kejriwal's image. AAP spokespersons argue that the BJP is attempting to divert attention from pressing issues facing Delhi residents. The party maintains that all renovations were conducted legally and transparently, intended for future occupants of the residence.

The Broader Context of Corruption Allegations

The controversy surrounding the 'Sheesh Mahal' is not new. It first gained traction earlier this year when discrepancies in renovation costs were highlighted by opposition parties. The BJP claims that approximately ₹45 crore was spent on lavish upgrades, including high-end furnishings and luxury amenities such as a gym and spa facilities. These claims have sparked widespread debate about accountability and ethics in governance.

As both parties gear up for an intense electoral battle, the focus on Kejriwal's residence symbolizes broader themes of governance, accountability, and public trust. With allegations flying and political stakes high, how voters respond to these narratives will significantly shape the outcome of Delhi's assembly elections.
