Indian Naval Warship INS Sunayna, which is deployed in Africa under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR mission, arrived at Nacala Port in Mozambique on 17 April 2025. The ship arrived in Mozambique after participating in the inaugural session of the India-Africa Maritime Partnership Exercise AIKEYME 25 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The SAGAR mission aims to boost maritime cooperation between India and African countries. Under this mission, INS Sunayna also sent 44 foreign naval personnel with her from 9 countries, including Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Maldives, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
INS Sunayna was welcomed at Nakala Port by Commander of Mozambique Nelson H. Mbazaiah, Chief of Commission, and the Mozambican Navy Band. During the stopover at the port, joint training, search and seizure (VBSS), fire fighting and damage control drills will be conducted onboard the ship, which will enhance operational coordination and capacity building between the two navies.
In addition, a deck reception will be held onboard INS Sunayna, which will be attended by local officials and distinguished guests. Yoga sessions by the ship's crew, ship visits for Indian expatriate and local children, maritime quiz competition and guided tours for the cadets of the Nampula Military Academy will also be conducted.
The port call will further deepen India-Mozambique naval cooperation. After the completion of the programme, the ship embarked on a joint maritime surveillance mission carrying personnel from the Mozambican Navy. The mission will ensure maritime security in Mozambique's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and counter non-traditional threats. The port call is in line with the Government of India's vision of SAGAR to promote maritime security, growth and regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
