New Delhi: India has unveiled its second nuclear submarine, INS Arighaat, at a ceremony in Visakhapatnam. This new addition to the Arihant-class submarines is set to bolster India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence and support regional stability and peace, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, present at the commissioning ceremony, hailed this milestone as a significant national achievement. He emphasized that it underscores the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's strong commitment to achieving "aatmanirbharta" or self-sufficiency in defense.

INS Arighaat: Leap forward in India's Naval power

The INS Arighaat's construction utilized cutting-edge design and manufacturing technology. The project involved extensive research and development, the use of specialized materials, complex engineering, and expert craftsmanship. This submarine features indigenous systems and equipment, all designed, developed, and integrated by Indian scientists, industry professionals, and naval personnel.

The technological advancements incorporated in INS Arighaat make it more advanced than its predecessor, the INS Arihant. With both submarines now operational, India’s capability to deter potential threats and protect its national interests has been significantly enhanced.

Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the industrial sector for their collaborative efforts in realizing this advanced capability. He noted that this level of self-reliance forms the bedrock of what he calls "self power". The project has provided a substantial boost to the country's industry, including micro, small, and medium enterprises, and has created numerous job opportunities.

Along with economic prosperity, we need a strong military: Singh

"Today, India is surging ahead to become a developed country. It is essential for us to develop rapidly in every field, including defence, especially in today's geopolitical scenario," Singh said.

Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of a robust military to complement India's economic growth, stating, "Along with economic prosperity, we need a strong military. Our government is working on mission mode to ensure that our soldiers possess top-quality weapons and platforms made on Indian soil." Singh also drew inspiration from former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visionary leadership, which elevated India to the status of a nuclear-armed nation.
