In a case that has sparked outrage, Raebareli Police mistakenly jailed an innocent man in their haste to show results. The victim, 28-year-old Deepu alias Gaurav, was released 12 days later, having been wrongfully imprisoned for trying to do the right thing—turning in an abandoned bag he found on the roadside.
Gaurav, a resident of Jamnipur Charuhar village under Gadaganj police station, was on his way to fetch RO water when he discovered the bag. Accompanied by four or five others, Gaurav promptly notified the village head and took the bag to the police station. However, instead of being commended for his honesty, Gaurav was detained at the station for two days. Later, officers took him to a remote location, where they recorded a video of him with the bag.
On August 26, the police falsely implicated Gaurav in a robbery case. They claimed to have recovered ₹7 lakh in cash and some documents and pinned the crime on him. Despite his release, Gaurav remains in shock over the ordeal and the way the legal system mishandled the situation.

Merchants and villagers rallied in Gaurav’s defense, protesting at the Gadaganj police station against the wrongful arrest. The incident traces back to August 20, when a robbery took place in the Gadaganj area, targeting a public service center operator. Under pressure to solve the case, the police hastily arrested Gaurav.
SHO Rakesh Chand’s negligence in the case has not only put Gaurav’s future at risk but has also cast a shadow over police procedures. The wrongful arrest has led to widespread criticism of the authorities' handling of the case.
