Innocence stolen: Bhiwandi rape video case highlights dangers of social media

Maharashtra: A 22-year-old man is in police custody after allegedly raping a friend, filming the assault, and sharing the video online, causing immense distress.Two accomplices have also been arrested in connection with the case, highlighting the severity of the crime and the devastating impact of online exploitation.

Betrayal and Assault

A 22-year-old man from Bhiwandi, identified as Chand Khan, has been arrested for allegedly raping his 19-year-old friend. According to police reports, Khan invited the victim for an outing on December 29, but instead took her to a lodge in Vajreshwari where he sexually assaulted her. He recorded the assault on his mobile phone and subsequently shared the video with her on WhatsApp.

Threats and Viral Dissemination

Khan then allegedly threatened the victim, stating that he would circulate the compromising video on social media if she refused to continue having sexual relations with him1. Further investigation revealed the involvement of two accomplices, Jameer Khan and Kavita, who also allegedly threatened to share the video. The video eventually went viral, causing the victim immense distress.

Legal Action and Arrests

After enduring the ordeal in silence for nearly a month, the 19-year-old victim finally filed a complaint with the Bhiwandi City Police. Authorities registered a case under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act against Chand Khan, Jameer Khan, and Kavita. Senior Police Inspector Krishna Dev Kharade confirmed that all three accused have been arrested and presented before the court, which has remanded them to police custody until Wednesday.
