Indus Waters Treaty: After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, India took a big decision to suspend the 64 -year -old Indus Water Treaty. The decision was taken in the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India's move is being seen as a strict message in the context of Pakistan promoting terrorism.
Indus Water Treaty, which was signed between Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan in 1960, is an important compromise of water sharing between the two countries. The purpose of this agreement was to resolve water disputes between the two countries and to distribute equal distribution of water resources.
Under this treaty, India has the right to three Eastern rivers - Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, while Pakistan has control over three western rivers - Sindh, Chenab and Jhelum. India has the right to use the water of these eastern rivers completely, while Pakistan has to allow the water of Western rivers to flow freely. This agreement has been sensitive to India, as experts believe that this agreement is more tilted in Pakistan's favor.
The suspension of Indus Water Treaty by India is a major diplomatic step. The move is being considered a tough message against Pakistan, which has played its role in promoting terrorism. India has made it clear that no compromise will be made on its water security in future and no attempt of Pakistan related to terrorism will be tolerated.
Former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal has seen this decision as a strategic response and said "blood and water cannot run together." This suspension was necessary to protect India's water resources and it also sent a message that India would not accept any compromise policy in dealing with terrorism. The suspension of Indus Water Treaty is not only a solution to a water dispute, but it is also a solid message to Pakistan to rethink its pro -terrorism view against India. This step explains India's commitment to national security and water resources security.
