Budget airline IndiGo has come under fire this week from Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale over ongoing issues with flight delays.

Gokhale penned a letter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) demanding action against the carrier for continual disruptions stemming from crew unavailability. The politician has requested a response detailing planned interventions within seven days.

IndiGo is yet to provide comment on the matter. However, the airline did announce on Thursday the removal of fuel surcharges on all domestic and international routes, citing lowered aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.

The charges, ranging from Rs300 to Rs1000 based on distance travelled, were introduced in October 2022 in response to consecutive ATF price hikes. But with the recent dip in costs, IndiGo stated it would withdraw the additional fees effective immediately.

As jet fuel can make up around 40% of an airline's expenses, the decision brings welcome relief for passengers on low-cost carriers. But flight delays remain an ongoing issue, with pressure mounting on the DGCA to address the situation.

The coming days will determine whether IndiGo can resolve crew availability problems and restore consistent operations.
