Indigenous submarine project: In a crucial milestone, Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL), a state-owned entity, has submitted its bid to the Defence Ministry for the construction of three new Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy. This initiative is part of a mega project undertaken in collaboration with the French firm Naval Group and aims to bolster India's naval capabilities.

Key Defence Project

Senior defence sources have confirmed the receipt of MDL's bids for the prestigious project, valued at over INR 20,000 crores. The submarines will be built indigenously in Mumbai, reflecting the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Successful Induction of Kalvari Class

India has already successfully inducted five out of the six Kalvari-class submarines, also known as the Scorpene class, ordered in 2005 from France. The sixth submarine is anticipated to be inducted into the Indian Navy in the coming year.

Project 75 Additional Submarines

The government approved the Project 75 Additional Submarines during a Defence Acquisition Council meeting in July 2023, aligning with its strategic plans. This initiative, alongside the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets, demonstrates India's determination to enhance its maritime capabilities.

Navy's Expectations and Accelerated Timeline

The Kalvari-class submarines have met the expectations of the Indian Navy, prompting the force to expedite the induction process. Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar has directed officials to streamline procedures, accelerating the commencement of submarine construction in Indian shipyards.

MDL's Track Record

MDL has a noteworthy track record, having already constructed six Scorpene submarines, five of which are operational. The commissioning of the sixth submarine, INS Vagir, is anticipated in early 2024. These submarines are integral to the Indian Navy's strategic capabilities, featuring advanced stealth technology, long-range guided torpedoes, and anti-ship missiles.

This bid by MDL marks a significant stride in advancing India's indigenous submarine capabilities, reinforcing the nation's maritime strength and technological prowess.
