New Delhi: Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy expressed deep concern over Indias rising population, emphasizing that the nation has neglected population control since the Emergency period. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) in Prayagraj on Sunday, where he was the chief guest, Murthy highlighted the pressing challenges India faces due to its burgeoning population.Population control: Neglected priorityMurthy pointed out that the issue of population control has been largely ignored in India for decades. Since the Emergency period, we Indians have not paid enough attention to population control. This poses a risk of making our country unsustainable, he remarked. He compared Indias situation with that of other nations, stating, Countries such as the US, Brazil, and China have far higher per capita land availability, which makes population management more feasible for them.Role of professionals in nation-buildingIn his address, Murthy also underscored the importance of professional responsibility in contributing to the nations development. He encouraged the graduates to set high aspirations and work diligently to achieve them. This contribution depends on having high aspirations, dreaming big, and working hard to turn those dreams into reality, he said, inspiring the audience to commit to the nations progress.Sacrifices for future generationsReflecting on his own journey, Murthy acknowledged the sacrifices made by his parents, siblings, and teachers, which played a crucial role in his success. One generation must make many sacrifices to improve the lives of the next. My presence here as the chief guest is proof that their sacrifices were not in vain, he concluded.
