The IPL 2023: What’s new?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season has begun on Friday evening, following much excitement (March 31). At the magnificent Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, the previous year’s victors Gujarat Titans (GT), faced the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The competition set the stage on fire once again, with enthusiastic cricket fans around the world glued to their television screens to watch the action.

In the all-new season, the Impact Player Rule will be implemented, teams will name their starting XIs after the coin toss, and the regular home-and-away structure will be reinstated during the league round. The group phase will consist of up to 70 games, concluded by the playoffs and final.

A great deal has altered in terms of squad composition for all ten teams since the IPL 2022 auction and in the preparations for the tournament. Due to unforeseeable occurrences for a few teams, new captains have also been selected. Here are more details on all the changes that you need to know about the new season of the Indian Premier League.

The Impact Player Rule

The “Impact Player Rule,” which was brought over from the Australian Big Bash League and tried out in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, may prove to be a game-changer in the IPL 2023 edition. The Rule states that teams may substitute one player in the middle of a match to better represent the conditions of the match and the terrain.

The Impact Player could be added at any of the stages listed below:

  • Prior to the beginning of the innings
  • When an over is completed
  • When a wicket falls, or a batter departs in the middle of an over

Teams are only permitted to have a playing XI of 4 foreign players, and a non-Indian player cannot take the place of an Indian player if the side already has four foreign players on the field. Nonetheless, the teams have the option to start the game with three foreign players and then add one more foreign player later on. Since a batter can always replace a specialist bowler in the second innings of a match, critics claim that the Impact Player Rule will lessen the need for elite all-rounders.

Toss has no team sheets

Team sheets are no longer a requirement to be distributed by captains prior to the toss. By selecting teams based on the outcome of the toss, the teams can now balance the toss advantage. They are permitted to field an XI with five substitutes; they are also allowed to select one player from the five substitutes to serve as an impact sub during the play. According to experts, this will enable the teams to create two separate starting lineups, one of which they will select based on the outcome of the toss.

DRS Calls

Players can now contest wide balls and no balls that the on-field umpires call. This was clearly demonstrated when the BCCI deployed the new technology for the very first time during the Women’s Premier League.
