Indian Navy’s latest warship ‘Mahendragiri’ was unveiled by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s wife, Dr Sudesh Dhankhar, at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai on Friday, a spokesperson for the Navy said.

The latest warship, the seventh frigate of the Project 17A, was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.

Dr Sudesh Dhankar visited the Mazagon Dock on Friday to bless the new frigate and approve its name – Mahendragiri – before it sailed into the Arabian Sea.

‘Mahendragiri’ was the last of the Project 17A frigates released by the Indian Navy. The sixth Project 17A warship, ‘Vindhyagiri’, was launched by President Droupadi Murmu on August 17 from the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers shipyard in Kolkata.

The previous five Project 17A warships were launched between 2019 and 22.

The Project 17A ships are an upgrade of the previous Project 17 (Shivalik class) frigates, and have improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems.

The new ships have a length of 149 metres, width of 17.8 metres, and a top speed of 28 knots (almost 52 km per hour), as per a Navy spokesperson.

“The newly christened Mahendragiri is a technologically advanced warship and stands as a symbol of India’s determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities,” a spokesperson for the Indian Navy said.
